Survey Results!

Today, we’ll take a look at the results of that survey and look at what we already know about the online Buffyverse fandom. I’ll give you a bit of time to talk amongst yourselves about the data in our comments section or on your own forums. Next week, I’ll talk a bit about what you wrote in the survey text box. Some of you wrote a lot!

Suffice it to say, the results here are promising enough that I’d love to do this for each of Whedon’s works, if you’re willing to keep taking the surveys. Are you?

I never imagined that we’d get more than 700 surveys in response to our little blog post. The prior version of this type of survey featured less than 25 respondents. The biggest survey of Buffy’s online fandom was done by Claudia Rebaza in November 2006. She got more than 1,500 or so responses and its results are featured in Buffy and Angel Conquer the Internet. It’s a fascinating read.

Buffy the Adventist

This piece is from WJ Editorial Board member, Tanya Cochran. Congratulations!

While a self-described "angry atheist" and an existentialist, Joss Whedon's also said that viewers can validly find god in his works. And, boy, have they ever! In addition to the four student papers I've got to read on the role of religion in the Whedonverses this year alone, I've had other students at the notably secular Emerson College react similarly to The Gift as Tanya did. And, of course, a 2002 Televangelist watchdog organization praised Buffy, in an article that demonstrated that the author had read some of the academic literature on the series.

There's a ton of books on the topic too. What Would Buffy Do?, Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon, and Televised Morality are just some of the books to look at Whedon's work through spirituality. And, of course, Whedon's acknowledgment of Wicca is notable as well, with Tara implicitly providing a role model, although it does take Willow until the series finale to actually practice that faith, with her Drawing Down ritual. My favorite article? "'Religion freaky' or 'A Bunch of Men Who Died'? The A/Theology of Buffy".

While not a particularly religious person myself, I would say that the series becomes most meaningful spiritually by forcing viewers to practice forgiveness through characters like Angel, Faith, Willow and Spike in seasons 3, 4, 6 and 7.

Values Survey Update

Well, we have over 700 responses to the survey in less than a week, with more coming in every day. Since the number of surveys being taken are starting to peter out, but are still significant, we figure we'll give it until next week for people to get their surveys in.

There's always one still working, isn't there?

After Buffy's done and we've put out the immolation-o-gram, we'll post the results, which, even on first glance, seem very interesting. There are several questions where there was almost universal agreement... and one in which there was no agreement at all!

What are the values expressed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

NEW! You can now take this survey on kwiksurveys here:

Take our Online Survey

This survey is designed to measure what you perceive to be the important values and forms of social support in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I thought it would be a neat idea to see what people think the values of the series are. It is one way of quantifying your perceptions of the meanings of the series. It's called a Rokeach Value Survey .

Please post your responses in the comments or email them to me to my gmail account, david [dot] kociemba. When you're done, you can take a look at one application of the survey to the series here and see the results. After some time has passed, I'll post my past class' responses to the series. If we get enough responses on the blog, I'll tabulate them all and post them here... it's for science!

Indicate the extent to which you see each value to be important in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. For each question, rank the value’s importance from 1 to 5 as represented by the series.

There are no right and wrong answers. Fill out the survey to the best of your ability as an indication of what your perception of the series is.
